Six months at Core Backbone. Time for a first look back!
Our colleague Jan, a Windows Specialist at Core Backbone, talks about his start at the company, exciting challenges, a high level of autonomy, and why our open corporate culture has inspired him from the very beginning. đź’¬
How did you experience your first six months at Core-Backbone?
“Exciting” probably sums it up quite well. I had already worked in administration before, but the transition from logistics companies to here was quite different, and I don’t even mean the work itself. It took some getting used to, but in an absolutely positive way, that almost all of my users work in IT themselves. That makes so many things easier.
Do you feel well integrated into your team and the company?
My manager threw me straight in at the deep end and let me fully jump into administrative tasks right away. Still, I was well supported by being introduced to the tools used here, and then it was straight into it. Learning by doing. That helped me quickly internalize the desired structure, and I like it. In a very short time, I settled in and was able to dig deeper and deeper, continuously cleaning up and modernizing existing structures.
Do your tasks match the expectations you had before starting?
In short: Yes. My area of responsibility was already clearly defined. It’s being expanded a bit, but always in line with what I implement. Everything is so interconnected that I don’t do anything that isn’t somehow related to my “core area of work”.
Do you feel your strengths and skills are being well utilized?
I’m given tasks for anything new that’s needed, whether it’s adjusting settings in the GPO or troubleshooting errors. At the same time, I’m given enough freedom to pursue my own topics and implement new ideas that no one had even considered before. I think this duality between “instruction” and “freedom” challenges my knowledge quite well.
How do you perceive the working atmosphere and company culture?
Very pleasant. My colleagues are all open and friendly and always up for a bit of fun, which keeps the atmosphere far from tense. At the same time, everyone is professional and carries out their work conscientiously, so things progress well. And even when disagreements arise due to a problem, they remain focused on the issue itself, there’s no holding grudges or taking things personally. That’s much better than letting things silently build up and eventually explode.
What surprised you most positively in the past six months?
What surprised me most was the genuinely open and warm nature of people in Nuremberg, and especially at Core-Backbone. No question was ever considered too silly, and different colleagues repeatedly offered to show me various things. And honestly, who wouldn’t want to be there for a generator test or see a real tank engine in action?
What do you wish for the coming months?
That things continue as they have so far. I help wherever I can, and in the remaining time I focus on everything I can modernize, configure, and automate.
